SKY is like an extended family, since everyone spends so much time together.
The many excursions they participate in assure that students forge everlasting memories with one another.
Aside from the normal class-time every second day, they are presented many opportunities for learning beyond classroom walls. There are usually two main trips throughout the year, one at the beginning and one towards the end. They can include camping, outdoor activities, and water sports. It’s a great way to get away from the busyness of life, and connect with nature.
Additionally, students attend various educational enrichment opportunities.
For example while learning about potable water, and the global issues surrounding it, students had the chance to visit Lulu Island wastewater treatment facility. It opened their eyes to something so pertinent in our community, and the fact that not everywhere around the world has such a system.
Something remarkable that the SKY students participate in is the credited course called ‘Independent Directed Studies’. It gives students the opportunity to study something they are passionate about or interested in, and to produce a project to showcase it.
This course allows students to really take charge of their learning and to explore their creativity.
While SKY presents all these impressive possibilities, it’s really up to the students, with the guidance of their teachers to make the most out of their experience.
It’s proven that when students enjoy what they learn, they will produce better results, which is what the program aims to ensure.
One of SKY’s teachers, Anita Fung, said: ”The excitement I see from my students when it comes to the quality of work and level of effort applied to everything they do, it’s such a breath of fresh air to see intrinsic motivation.”
