This Saturday, June 17 from 2 to 4 p.m., locals are invited to the City Centre Community Centre to celebrate Aboriginal Day.

Recognizing this land wasn’t empty when settlers arrived and that this land remains unceded, Saturday’s celebration of First Nations’ culture will feature examples of the lush culture in the region before European colonization.

A drumming ceremony led by Shoshone Elder, Old Hands, will kick-off the time of the afternoon’s recognition and learning while Snuneymuxw and Cowichan Elder, Roberta Price, will offer blessings.

Fara Palmer and the SisterClan, Richmond’s own Aboriginal pop, R B and soul singer-songwriter, from the Cree, Ojibwe, Secwepemc and Dakelh Nations, will offer their music while two youth dancers Naomi Black from the Tsikene and Oji-Cree Nations, and Tristian Bruyere from the Salish and Ojibway Nations will share dances from their heritages,

The program’s main facilitator is Terry Point, Cultural Educator from the Musqueam First Nation. Aboriginal Day celebrations will mark the completion of a piece of art, the result of collaborative sessions led by Point earlier in June.

The artwork represents Richmond’s growing First Nations community that builds on the roots of the Musqueam.

The finished piece will first be displayed at City Centre Community Centre for Canada 150 before finding a permanent home at Richmond City Hall.

Aboriginal Day, hosted by the City Centre Community Association, the City of Richmond’s Diversity Services Department, hopes to forge links between our First Peoples and the settler population in Richmond.

City Centre Community Centre is located at 5900 Minoru Blvd. For more information about this event, call 604-204-8588 or visit
