An early Monday afternoon apartment fire at 6211 Gilbert Rd. has left four adults and a child without a home.
There were no injuries resulting from the small fire that started around 1 p.m. and occurred in the kitchen of the ground-floor unit at Richmond Gardens, at the corner of Gilbert and Azure Road, a block south of Westminster Highway.
The fire spread to the second storey of the same unit, but Richmond Fire-Rescue was able to quickly knock down the fire, City of Richmond spokesperson Ted Townsend told The Richmond Sentinel.
Four fire trucks were on the scene, doing salvage and overhaul work to the damaged portion of the building.
The five tenants have occupant insurance, and will have a roof over their heads as a result, Townsend said.
According to fire crews, most other tenants, who quickly evacuated the building when the fire started, will be able to re-enter their suites “in short order,” Townsend said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
