The holiday break may be fast approaching, but Richmond’s R.A. McMath Wildcats aren’t lounging.

Led by their talented Grade 11 forward Liz Kennedy, the Wildcats stopped the province’s No. 1-ranked AA team in their tracks Thursday during the opening round of the Tsumura Invitational in Langley.

Kennedy poured in a team-high 21 points to power the Wildcats to a 59-42 victory over South Kamloops Titans in the opening round of senior high school girls’ play.

Grade 8 standout Marina Radocaj was also stellar pulling down 14 boards and blocking seven shots to go along with nine points.

The Wildcats also got timely scoring from Jayna Wilson and Abby Boden, and Morgan Flynn—elevated to the starting lineup in the absence of Caitlin Bradley-Tse and Caitlin Kippan—enjoyed her finest game of the year giving South Kamloops star and 2018 provincial MVP Maddy Gobeil fits all game with her tenacious defence.

McMath plays Langley’s Brookswood Friday at 4:45 p.m. at Langley Events Centre, with the Wildcats set to play two more games on Saturday.

Currently sporting a 5-0 record, the road-weary Wildcats (who have been bounced from their home floor until the new year) will spend this Sunday giving back. The girls have volunteered for community service on the Downtown Eastside, before returning to basketball at Port Coquitlam’s Riverside Secondary School next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with games against Langley Christian, Walnut Grove and host Riverside.
