The Richmond Sockeyes’ season to date was captured in a 48-hour period last week.

After an impressive 10-2 victory last Wednesday (Sept. 20) at the Langley Trappers, the Sockeyes were unable to make it two wins in a row, losing 5-2 to the Delta Ice Hawks back home at Minoru Arenas.

As a result, Richmond continues to sport a .500 record (2-2-0-1) through the first five Pacific Junior Hockey League games.

Captain Tyler Andrews built on his tremendous start with two goals and two assists against Langley, and now sports a league-best 15 points in five games.

But as impressive as Andrews’ effort was against the Trappers, it was Brett Gelz’ one-goal, five-assist effort that stood out. Nicholas Bizzutto’s hat trick and three assists by Cameron Kovesdi also helped the cause.

Perhaps physically drained, the Sockeyes were out-skated by the Ice Hawks who dominated the territorial play to improve to 5-0-0-0 on the season. After taking a 1-0 lead late in a relatively close first period, Delta pulled away in the second with an early goal (which Richmond matched moments later) and then three more in four minutes midway through the period. The Sockeyes capped the night’s scoring with Devon Vorster’s tally with 50 seconds to play.

Richmond is set to host Mission City Outlaws this Thursday at 7 p.m. at Minoru Arenas. The Outlaws handed the Sockeyes a 5-3 setback Sept. 16 in Mission.

EYE BROWSE: On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Sockeyes’ popular mascot Socko will be making an appearance from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the OktoberfeSteveston street party. Sockeye players will also participate in a street hockey session.
