Rogers hammers out another record
Camryn Rogers turned in a commanding
performance in her triumphant return to the Pacific Northwest on Friday.
Kicking off her second athletics season with
the University of California-Berkeley Bears, the Richmond Kajak came up with a
career-best throw of 21.06 metres to win the women’s hammer throw at the
University of Washington invitational indoor meet last weekend in Seattle. She
followed that up with three more throws that bettered her best in 2018, while
also registering the second-best mark in school history.
It’s hard to imagine how much better Rogers
can be, but given her athletic talent and determination to continually improve
it’s likely there will be many more highlights to come.
Last year, her first as a Bear, the 2017
McMath Secondary grad just missed qualifying for the NCAA championship with a
throw of 61.31 metres at the West preliminaries after placing third at the
Pac-12 champs with a mark of 62.25 metres. She also set a school and Canadian
under-20 record of 65.61 metres at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge. Then in the
summer, Rogers won the under-20 world championship in Helsinki, Finland with a
throw of 64.90 metres in the hammer throw.
