Rogers keeps on breaking records
Just when it seems Camryn Rogers can’t
possibly top her previous best, she does just that.
And more.
The 18-year-old Richmond athlete, in the
first year of an athletic scholarship at the University of California at
Berkeley, established the second-best hammer throw in school history at the Pac-!2/Big-10 Challenge Saturday
in Tempe, Arizona. Her throw of 65 metres (213.4 feet) was only 0.2 metres
(eight inches) off the school record of Jennifer Joyce (who also grew up in
Richmond, and was a fellow member of the Kajaks, the city’s track and field
club) set in 2002.
Rogers also bested her own Canadian under-20
record, and the freshman record which she set in the first meet of the year.
But that’s not all. With her 65-metre throw,
the 2017 R.A. McMath Secondary School graduate established a Canadian junior
record in the hammer throw. She finished just back of Arizona State’s Maggie
Ewen, who was a Bowerman finalist last year. Ewen is ranked No. 2 in the world
at the senior level, and Rogers No. 1 at the under-20 level.
Athletics Canada announced earlier today
(Monday) that Rogers has been selected as a finalist for the U20 Athlete of the
Year award. The other finalists are Lucia Stafford and Nina Schultz.
