Moana inaugurates Richmond's newest park
Aberdeen Park, our city’s newest park
officially opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19 with a free showing of the movie Moana
at 8 p.m. in the open air. To add to the festive air, there will also be
children’s entertainment and local food trucks.
“This
public celebration highlights this new park located in the emerging Capstan
Village area in the heart of Richmond City Centre and the City’s continued
commitment to providing green space in urban areas,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie.
According to the City of Richmond
spokesperson, Ted Townsesnd, “Key features of the newly developed Aberdeen
Park, located at 8331 Cambie Road, include an off leash dog park, two water
features, a new plaza, site furnishings and lighting, upgraded utilities,
public art, a hill 20 feet high, concrete pathways, new trees, shrubs and
groundcover. Phase 2 of the project will include a children’s playground and a
cultural exchange garden.”
Located at 8331 Cambie Road one block, a
five-minute walk from the Aberdeen Centre Skytrain station, the new 4.1 acre
park has limited parking so the city suggests park-goers plan their trip
accordingly. They also suggest people remember to bring blankets to keep
warm. As the sunsets, the breezes from the water can be quite cool.
Townsend says, “This park will function both
as a neighbourhood green space that provides contrast and relief from the busy
urban realm, and as a vital and attractive square for public gatherings and
community activities.”
