Three facilities in Richmond are becoming $10 a day ChildCareBC sites, capping fees at a maximum of $200 a month per child.
Seasong Child Care Centre, Cook Road Children’s Centre, and West Cambie Children’s Centre will offer a total of 124 spaces with much lower fees for families.
“I know that having access to affordable child care makes a real difference for families,” says Richmond–Steveston MLA Kelly Greene. “By creating $10 a day child care spaces like the ones at Seasong Childcare Centre in my riding, we are continuing our commitment to supporting families, which strengthens our communities.”
The number of $10 a day spaces has increased from 2,500 when the program began in 2018 to more than 6,500. Through a partnership with the Government of Canada, the number of $10 a day spaces in the province will double again to 12,500 by this December.
“Part of building a stronger B.C. is setting families up for success,” says Richmond South Centre MLA Henry Yao. “Our government is investing in $10 a day childcare, which gives parents, mostly women, the option to return to work and pursue their passions while helping our community economically recover from the pandemic.”
By the end of this year, the average rate of child care will be reduced by 50 per cent from 2019 levels for children five and younger.
“As a parent, I’ve learned first-hand the challenges of accessing childcare while balancing a career,” says Richmond–Queensborough MLA Aman Singh. “$10 a day childcare spaces give more families the opportunity to pursue their careers and education while their kids are learning and playing in a nurturing environment.”
