New food arriving at YVR
It didn’t look promising. The skies were grey and a slight mist threatened rain but by the time the crowds showed up, Vancouver International Airport’s Taste Vancouver event the breezes were soft and the air warm and dry.
It didn’t look promising. The skies were grey and a slight mist threatened rain but by the time the crowds showed up for Vancouver International Airport’s Taste Vancouver event the breezes were soft and the air warm and dry.
Scott Norris, YVR’s vice-president for commercial development, led the Aug. 30 tour. It was a chance to sample the newest foodie offerings coming to our airport—everything from Japa Dog, the Asian fusion hot dog carts famous throughout Metro Vancouver to Sal y Limon’s authentic Mexican cuisine.
Already arrived is Uno Gelato, described as “farm to cone, all local ingredient, hand made ice cream.” Found in the pre-security, public area of the international terminal, until now Richmondites had to travel to their Stamp’s Landing shop or the one at Broadway and Trafalgar to get a taste of this delight.
As Norris says, “What you had to go to downtown Vancouver for, is now available at YVR.”
The list of tasting options also includes:
• Pacific Farms’ Tastes on the Fly coming to both the domestic and international terminals this coming spring and summer.
• The Dirty Apron comes to the domestic terminal inside security this spring. Owned and operated by husband and wife team, chef David and Sara Robertson who are branching out from their Beatty St. Dirty Apron, delicatessen and cooking school since 2009.
• Heritage Asian Eatery will offer authentic Taiwanese food and contemporary Asian comfort food starting in the spring inside security in the domestic terminal.
• The Illycaffé opened at the start of August. It offers, of course, fine Italian coffee in addition to fresh sandwiches, healthy salad and breakfast cups and luscious baked goods as well as wry posters on the wall.
• Stanley Park Taphouse inside domestic departures security opened in December of 2017. It offers starters, share plates, enormous salads and braised short rib burgers that can be paired with BC wine or craft beers. Also on offer, gluten-free options.
• Globe@YVR at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport invites people to experience the flavours of our region with locally-sourced, sustainably grown ingredients cooked by chefs of the highest order. Open every day for all three meals, the restaurant offers fine dining with floor-to-ceiling views of the mountains and airport runways.
• Hudson group may not be a name you know but they are one of the largest travel retailers in North America. Hudson Group operates a number of stores at YVR, including travel essentials and convenience stores, bookstores, duty-free shops and branded specialty stores.
• Cheena Canada, Gourmet Canadiana Products and Maple Terroir Productions may also be unfamiliar names but the group of three companies, run by former Richmondite, Shawn Lytton, and started by his father, were the very first to offer sliced smoked salmon in a cedar box for export. They also have a variety of maple syrup products including the every-popular maple cream cookies. Their products, available throughout the Lower Mainland can also be found at YVR for those last minute hostess gifts before you fly.
All in all, the festive atmosphere overrode the clouds in the sky as a large crowd of media, food bloggers and YVR employees mixed, mingled and snacked their way around the tempting treats on offer. A good time was had by all.
