Richmond heritage sites, plazas and parks are alive with the sound of music.
Richmond heritage sites, plazas
and parks are alive with the sound of music.
The sixth annual Richmond Pianos
on the Street program provides five open air publicly accessible pianos
throughout the city for the community to enjoy and play.
The artfully painted pianos can
be found outdoors in the unusual places of the Richmond Nature Park, Britannia
Shipyards National Historic Site, Terra Nova Community Gardens, the Richmond
Cultural Centre Plaza and King George Park. Community members of all ages and
musical abilities are invited to play and enjoy the pianos now through to the
end of September.
The pianos have been artistically
and creatively reimagined by Richmond artists. Professional artist Catherine
Adamson reimagined the pianos at Britannia Shipyards and Richmond Nature Park
with her distinctive “Jackson Pollack meets Van Gogh” style of painting and
artists as young as five years old from Thompson Community Association’s Terra
Nova Nature Camp delightfully recreated the story of much loved Peter Rabbit on
the piano in the Community Gardens at Terra Nova Rural Park.
Young Cambie Community Centre
students of Chinese Brush Painting artist and instructor Nancy Chew creatively
interpreted traditional Chinese imagery to beautify the piano at King George
Park and the Richmond Cultural Centre Plaza piano was artistically transformed
by the Richmond Art Gallery Youth Collective.
The Pianos on the Street Program
is sponsored by the City of Richmond Public Art Program and Pacey’s Pianos, in
partnership with local community groups and artists.
