After absentee votes are counted, Johal takes Richmond-Queensborough by 129 votes
With the final numbers now tallied, Jas Johal
has officially earned the nod as the B.C. member of the legislative assembly
for the new Richmond-Queensborough riding.
Following the counting of absentee ballots
this week, Johal edged out NDP candidate Aman Singh by 129 votes. Johal
received 8,218 votes (41.74 per cent), while Singh got 8,034 votes (40.75 per
cent). Green candidate Michael Wolfe placed third, receiving 2,524 votes (12.72
per cent).
After election night May 9, Johal had earned
41.74 per cent (7,525 votes) relative to the 40.28 per cent (7,262 votes)
received by Singh.
The Liberals also captured the other three
Richmond ridings. Linda Reid, who previously was the long-serving MLA in the
Richmond East riding, was elected in the new Richmond South Centre riding with
6 914 votes, while NDP candidate Chak Au got 5,666 votes. Teresa Wat was
re-elected in the Richmond North Centre riding with 7,916 votes compared to NDP
candidate Lyren Chiu’s 5,135 votes, while John Yap was re-elected in
Richmond-Steveston with 10,332 votes, edging out NDP candidate Kelly Greene who
received 8,542 votes.
