COVID-19 hospitalizations, critical care admissions rise in B.C.

There are 280 people in hospital today as a result of COVID-19—the highest number since Feb. 2.
Of those, 84 are intensive care, the most since Dec. 22.
There were 556 new cases reported today, 14 of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 88,929 cases.
Of the new cases, 139 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 331 in the Fraser Health region, 27 in the Island Health region, 16 in the Interior Health region, 41 in the Northern Health region and two new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
There are 4,999 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. A further 9,511 people under active public health monitoring, the highest number since Dec. 24.
Health authorities reported 116 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 996 cases. Only 130 are currently active cases. Of the new cases, 103 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant and 13 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.
To date, 424,517 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,070 of which are second doses. Vaccine appointment bookings are open for people over 83, adding one year each day this week for people 80 and older by the end of the week, along with Indigenous peoples over 65.
There were no new virus-related deaths reported today, and no new healthcare facility outbreaks. Outbreaks continue at six long-term care and independent living facilities and eight acute care facilities.
