An international group advocating for vision health among older adults is hosting a webinar tomorrow to discuss emerging policies for the use of biosimilars in ophthalmology in Canada.
Known globally as a leading and innovative organization that works across disciplines and sectors, toward common goals that improve the lives of older people, the International Federation on Ageing’s March 23 webinar will examine the use of biosimilar drugs in ophthalmology in Canada.
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Report on Vision estimates there are hundreds of millions of older people living with blinding eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). Within Canada, over 90 per cent of ophthalmic procedures are performed on Canadians aged 65 years or over, with AMD and DR being two of the top five eye conditions that contribute to the majority of vision loss nationally.
Clinical dialogue and guidance alongside comprehensive patient education are foundational elements of a comprehensive policy framework for the appropriate use of biosimilars in ophthalmology. Without these fundamental resources, key stakeholders including older Canadians, their caregivers and health care providers are in a challenging situation when it comes to effectively managing vision health treatment.
As biosimilars in ophthalmology emerge as a potential treatment option for eye conditions, stakeholders including patient organizations have called for biosimilar policies to foster an informed, joint decision-making approach between patients and health care professionals. In order to achieve this, the awareness and engagement of all stakeholders including vision health professionals, patient organizations, professional associations and older Canadians is critical to the development of a robust policy framework.
This webinar entitled “Biosimilars in Ophthalmology: International Policies and Professional Perspectives” provides a virtual platform to learn about good practices and recommendations for effective biosimilar policy frameworks through a discussion with global leaders in the field of ophthalmology.
