Smart Cities vision will make lives, and our world, better

The City of Richmond was a finalist in Infrastructure Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge – a nation-wide opportunity to win $10 million to support our emergency response and resiliency through the use of technology. While we did not win the competition our Smart Cities journey will continue.
What I know from my experience training for and competing in two Olympic Winter Games is that healthy competition brings out the best in us. Through the Smart Cities Challenge, our best was brought forward. We came together with major stakeholders and thought leaders in Richmond including MDA Systems Ltd, the Port of Vancouver, Vancouver International Airport and First Nations as well as consulted extensively with the community.
A plan was put in place to create an “Intelligent Operations Hub” to make Richmond more resilient to deal with emergencies, improve traffic and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
For many years we have been hearing about climate change and its effects. This challenge enabled us a space to create practical, high-tech solutions to make real changes to our city that will benefit all of us who live here and reduce our impact on the planet.
The Intelligent Operations Hub plan is to:
• Collect data from various sites throughout Richmond;
• Connect that data through fibre optic to the main processing centre;
• Crunch the data into easy to use bits of information and direct changes and decisions; and
• Communicate the results to you in Richmond through media platforms.
Imagine, for example, that you are registered for a City of Richmond program and that a hazardous materials spill has occurred between you and the program. Now imagine that the information about the spill goes to the City, the City crunches the information and alerts you, on your mobile device, that based on your address and the location of the spill, you should take a specific detour to be on time. This will save you frustration and will reduce congestion around the spill: avoiding GHGs and making it easier for the first responders to attend the scene.
That is just one small example of how technology will make our everyday life better, make us safer
and reduce our impact on the environment.
That’s why we will continue to work with our partners and other government agencies to implement the vision we created for the Smart Cities Challenge. Using technology, we can more efficiently and effectively use our existing infrastructure The better we manage what we have, the better our lives will be and the better our world will be.
