B.C. reports preliminary count of 873 new COVID-19 cases

B.C. health authorities reported 873 new cases of COVID-19 today, bringing the province’s cumulative total to 113,702 cases.

“Due to a delay in the Public Health Reporting Data Warehouse lab system, these numbers are preliminary and may be adjusted once confirmed with data,” said health officials in a joint statement.

Of the new cases, 218 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 512 in the Fraser Health region, 43 in the Island Health region, 72 in the Interior Health region and 28 in the Northern Health region.

There are 9,756 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 377 people are hospitalized, 116 of whom are in intensive care. Hospitalizations linked to COVID-19 in B.C. peaked at 381 in early January. A further 16,290 people are under active public health monitoring.

Health authorities reported 1,110 new confirmed cases that are variants of concern, bringing B.C.’s total to 5,221 cases. Of those, 258 cases are currently active. Of the total cases, 3,627 are the B.1.1.7 (U.K.) variant, 65 are the B.1.351 (South Africa) variant and 1,529 are the P.1 (Brazil) variant.

To date, 1,148,993 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca-SII COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C., 87,785 of which are second doses. 

Sadly, there were two new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,515.

Health authorities reported one healthcare facility outbreak over. Active outbreaks continue at seven long-term care, assisted living and independent living facilities and five acute care facilities.
