COVID-19 cases keep climbing

B.C. health officials reported 2,046 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 233,217 cases.
Confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of concern are up to 975. Of those, 496 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 221 in the Fraser Health region, 235 in the Island Health region, 19 in the Interior Health region and four in the Northern Health region.
Of today’s new cases, 880 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 741 in the Fraser Health region, 248 in the Island Health region, 123 in the Interior Health region, 53 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.
There are 8,739 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 195 of those people are hospitalized, 75 of whom are in intensive care.
To date, 9,248,433 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,124,437 of those are second doses and 785,505 are third doses.
This means that 92.2 per cent of adults, 91.8 per cent of people aged 12 and older and 87.7 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 89.5 per cent of adults, 89 per cent of those aged 12 and older and 82.7 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses. Eighteen per cent of adults and 17 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.
Sadly, there was one new virus-related death reported today, bringing that total to 2,410. The person lived in the Island Health region.
There remains one active health-care outbreak in an acute care facility.
From Dec. 15 to 21, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 24.8 per cent of cases and from Dec. 8 to 21 they accounted for 68.6 per cent of hospitalizations.
