COVID-19 in B.C.: 274 new cases, 14 deaths

B.C. health officials reported 274 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 351,415 cases.

Of the new cases, 36 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 48 in the Fraser Health region, 77 in the Island Health region, 84 in the Interior Health region, 29 in the Northern Health region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 405 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 and 58 are in intensive care.

To date, 11,388,672 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,315,064 of those are second doses and 2,610,544 are third doses. 

This means that 93.7 per cent of adults, 93.3 per cent of people aged 12 and older, and 90.7 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 91.3 per cent of adults, 90.8 per cent of those aged 12 and older, and 86.6 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 58.2 per cent of adults and 56.3 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were 14 new COVID-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,929. Of those who died, three lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, six in the Fraser Health region, and five in the Island Health region.

Health authorities reported one new health-care facility outbreak. Active outbreaks continue at 13 long-term care facilities, one assisted or independent living facility, and one acute care facility.

From March 1 to 7, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 18.7 per cent of cases and from Feb. 22 to March 7, they accounted for 30.4 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 58 (2.5 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,874 (81.3 per cent)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Feb. 22 to March 7)—Total 398

• Not vaccinated: 100 (25.1 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 21 (5.3 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 277 (69.6 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (March 1 to 7)

• Not vaccinated: 103.9

• Partially vaccinated: 35.7

• Fully vaccinated: 40.3

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Feb. 22 to March 7)

• Not vaccinated: 27.0

• Partially vaccinated: 19.6

• Fully vaccinated: 5.9
