Kwantlen names Vanderburgh incoming provost

Kwantlen Polytechnic University has found its
new senior administrator.
And it’s a familiar face.
Sandy Vanderburgh is returning to KPU, where
he will start as incoming provost in May before adding the title of
vice-president academic on July 1. He replaces Dr. Sal Ferreras who announced
last year that he would explore new opportunities after six years at the helm.
“I’ve been fortunate to have been able to
work in the post-secondary sector, working around brilliant people, students
and people who want to learn,” said Vanderburgh, who was a sessional instructor
at KPU early in his career before taking on leadership roles at post-secondary
schools in the Fraser Valley and Alberta.
“It’s been an amazing career so far and I’m
really excited about coming back to KPU. Going back to my very first
experiences at KPU, it was clear that student success was front and centre.”
A focus of Vanderburgh’s 26-year academic
career has been research. That has included authoring more than 50 articles,
with coastal erosion along the Pacific Northwest a focal point.
“It’s very applied hands-on research and
engages students in the work,” he said. “KPU is well-regarded for its strength
in teaching and learning and I think there’s also a big opportunity to augment
that with growth in applied research and innovation.”
Vanderburgh said he’d like KPU to be
innovative when it comes to providing learning opportunities for students,
including looking at micro-credentials and recognizing work experience.
“This fits in really well with the changing
needs of students,” he said. “Students want to have a job when they come out of
post-secondary, more so than ever.”
