April 16 to 22 is National Volunteer Week.

Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG) is busy preparing for the 2023 Volunteers Are Stars Awards, happening this Wednesday, April 19, at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel.

It's the first time in three years the event will be held in person, and RCRG can't wait to be together again with friends, partners, and fellow community members, celebrating Richmond's best and brightest volunteers. There's still time to purchase tickets!

National Volunteer Week, however, isn't just about big events. It's also about small acts of gratitude and recognition. It's about showing volunteers, in your own way, that you see and appreciate their contributions.

At RCRG, a longstanding tradition is to mail handmade thank you cards to each volunteer. The cards—themselves created by volunteers—contain personal messages from staff members, thanking the recipient for supporting our organization, whether through the Richmond Christmas Fund, our Seniors Community Support Services, or another programs.

This year's cards should be arriving in the mailboxes of 229 volunteers, who, in the past year, contributed 8,895 hours, helping to ensure that our programs and services met the needs and improved the lives of countless Richmond residents.

Each year, Volunteer Canada announces a theme for National Volunteer Week, and in 2023, it's Volunteering Weaves Us Together. That's true on many levels.

Volunteering, as an activity, helps to connect people with similar passions, and often leads to enduring friendships.

Volunteering, as an act of service, helps to connect vulnerable community members with programs and supports that will enhance their quality of life.

And volunteering, as a reflection of one's values, helps to connect residents who might otherwise have little in common. Whatever their differences, all volunteers share the goal of building a strong, healthy, thriving community.

No matter how you look at it, volunteering is a positive force that weaves us together. In the coming days, we hope you'll find time to celebrate community service, reflect on its impact, and most of all, extend gratitude to the volunteers who make Richmond the vibrant, amazing community that it is.

From all of us at RCRG, to every volunteer in Richmond (especially our own): thank you for your service, and Happy National Volunteer Week.
