Metro Vancouver, through Invest Vancouver, has once again proclaimed June to be Clean Transportation Month in the region.

Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors made the declaration to celebrate our region’s clean transportation industrial strengths, as well as the numerous clean transportation events occurring during the month. The Province of British Columbia has made a similar proclamation, making Clean Transportation Month a province-wide initiative.

Invest Vancouver, the regional economic development leadership service of Metro Vancouver, is marking the special month by spotlighting local innovations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reimagining the regional transportation experience, and engaging with policy and business leaders from around the world.

“The Metro Vancouver region has established itself as a prominent player in the research, development, production, and export of innovative mobility solutions for combating climate change,” said George V. Harvie, chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors. “By fostering collaboration between the government, industry, academia and researchers, and leveraging its strengths in the hydrogen sector and clean transportation, we can take this industry to the next level.”

Transportation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the Metro Vancouver region, accounting for about 45 per cent. The burgeoning clean transportation sector has a role to play in helping the region to achieve deep emissions reductions and build a low-carbon, resilient future — in particular, supporting the rapid development and scaling up of zero-emission and low-carbon options and bringing new innovations to market.

The region is a leading developer of clean transportation solutions, with business clusters and industrial specializations in low- and zero-emission vehicles and components, low-carbon fuels and charging infrastructure, plus an advanced and growing hydrogen cluster. There are 60 firms operating in the Metro Vancouver region employing more than 2,800 people, and the sector attracted more than $2.6 billion in investment between 2017 and 2021.

“The future of our regional and provincial economies will be driven by low- and zero-emissions transportation,” said Kevin Quinn, chief executive officer of TransLink. “Becoming a carbon neutral region will require innovation, investment, and collaboration — that’s why TransLink is a proud supporter of Clean Transportation Month.”

Clean Transportation Month will feature demonstration events, networking sessions for investors seeking their next new mobility investment opportunity, and panels elevating groundbreaking and disruptive ideas:

  • HUB Bike to School Week (May 29 – June 2)
  • HUB Go by Bike Week (May 29 – June 4)
  • hyfcell Canada 2023 (June 5 – 7)
