On Saturday July 8, Richmond RCMP Frontline and Road Safety Unit officers teamed up with BC Highway Patrol for an Enhanced Road Safety Enforcement Initiative (ERSEI), aimed at getting drunk drivers off the road.

During the one-night Counterattack Road Check operation (at the Sea Island Way off-ramp from Highway 99 South), 8 impaired drivers were detained and removed from local roadways.

Another driver was also arrested for driving while prohibited. In total, drivers received tickets for 49 various provincial charges during this one-night enforcement operation.

“ERSEI operations like this one, which sees Richmond RCMP collaborating with BC Highway Patrol, allows us to enhance our enforcement of road safety rules and regulations,” says Constable Frank Tarape of the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.

During the month of July, Enhanced Road Safety Enforcement Initiatives will be occurring every Friday and Saturday night somewhere in the City of Richmond.

“Our message is clear,” says Cst. Tarape, “Drive safe. If you’re going to drink, don’t drive.”
