Spotlight on more great viewing & a summer cocktail

THE SUMMER FLICK #1 – The Last Breath

As this summer continues to moves on, the potential movie blockbusters continue to be released, including this latest entry, The Last Breath. It manages to combine several elements that scare most moviegoers: diving into deep water, a dark, sunken ship and, oh yes, hungry sharks. The story centres around an expat running a diving business in the British Virgin Islands (Julian Sands), and his college dropout friend (Jack Parr). Their goal has been to locate the long-lost wreck of the warship, USS Charlotte, which, thanks to a recent tropical storm, has emerged and become visible on the ocean floor for the first time in eighty years. But before these two can celebrate, some visiting friends show up, and a dive for the eager group quickly follows. What’s waiting for them thirty metres down amongst the sunken ship? I think you can guess. Now it should be stated that nothing will ever match the brilliance of Jaws, the movie which started this genre 50 years ago, but The Last Breath will have you jumping in your seat (or on the edge of it) as the group fights to stay alive while their air supply starts to dwindle. In theatres now and for home viewing. falconink.com

THE SUMMER SIP – Blackberry Bramble Sour

In need of another summer cocktail, we turned to Richard Goodine of Skye Avenue Kitchen & Lounge, and frequent food and cocktail ambassador for Our City Tonight. “This is a perfect summer cocktail,” Goodine tells us as we sit watching him create this drink from behind the bar at Skye. “It’s what happens when a Bourbon Bramble meets a Whiskey Sour and together the outcome is amazing,” he says. Like all the cocktails our experts recommend, the Blackberry Bramble Sour is easy to make at home. Start with fresh blackberries, muddled and made into a simple syrup, then add 2 ounces of Bullet Bourbon, 1 ounce of lemon juice, 1 ounce of blackberry, simple syrup, 1 ounce of egg whites, then shake and pour through a strainer over ice. skyeavenue.com
THE SUMMER VIEW #2 – Girl You Know It’s True

For a brief time in the late 1980’s to the early 90’s, their music was everywhere, with four top hits off their debut album. But then as quickly as Milli Vanilli had exploded on the music scene, they imploded and became what many have called the biggest scandal in music history. Now comes a new film about the duo called Girl You Know It’s True, which follows the true story of Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, the photogenic faces, but – and this is the key point – not the voices behind Milli Vanilli. When it was revealed that in fact other singers were the voices behind those catchy songs, this pop duo’s fame turned to infamy. Though their misleading musical situation was not unique at the time, they were the biggest stars and they paid the price. Look for this film in theaters Aug. 9.
