Richmond RCMP launches summer impaired driving enforcement on roads and water

As summer activities ramp up, Richmond RCMP is reminding all drivers to plan ahead and drive sober. From June through August, officers will be increasing impaired driving enforcement operations and education as part of the provincial CounterAttack campaign.
Enforcement on land and water
Richmond RCMP’s Road Safety Unit (RSU) will be conducting roadblocks throughout the summer, targeting impaired drivers. The CounterAttack enforcement initiative aims to reduce impaired-driving related injuries and fatalities.
In addition to roadside efforts, Richmond RCMP’s marine vessel, the Fraser Guardian, will be actively patrolling the Fraser River. Officers will be conducting both enforcement and outreach to ensure boat operators are licensed, sober, and taking necessary safety precautions.
“Whether you’re behind the wheel of a boat or a car, the rules are the same—drive sober,” says Sergeant Eric Baskette, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit. “Our goal is to prevent tragedies before they happen.”
Consequences of impaired driving:
B.C. has the toughest drinking and driving laws in Canada. If you’re caught driving impaired, potential penalties include:
- Immediate driving suspensions (24 hours to 90 days)
- Vehicle impoundment
- Fines ranging from $600 to over $4,000
- Jail time
- Mandatory rehabilitation
- Installation of ignition interlock in your vehicle
Drivers may also be denied insurance coverage if they are involved in a crash while impaired.
Make a plan
Richmond RCMP encourages everyone to plan a safe ride home. Options include using a designated driver, calling a taxi or rideshare, or taking public transit.
