Suspect in alleged stranger assault involving a weapon arrested

UPDATE: Richmond RCMP determined suspect arrested for alleged assault with weapon is known to victim

Richmond RCMP issued an update regarding the suspect arrested for alleged assault with weapon. Through further investigation, Richmond RCMP have determined the man and woman  from the August 13, 2025 incident are known to each other, and it is not a stranger assault as previously reported. Investigators determined this once they were able to interview the victim. 

The woman is recovering at the local hospital in stable condition and the man remains in custody. 

Richmond RCMP want to assure the public there is no ongoing risk as this was an isolated incident. 

In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information will be released at this time. 

On August 13, 2025, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Richmond RCMP responded to an assault with a weapon at a parkade of a retail shopping centre in the 6500 block of No. 3 Road. Richmond RCMP received the call from an on-duty security guard who heard the commotion and intervened.

Richmond RCMP frontline officers quickly arrived on-scene and arrested the suspect without further incident.  The suspect remains in-custody and there is no ongoing risk to the public.

The victim was transported to local hospital and is currently in stable condition. 

The two individuals are not believed to be known to each other. 

“We want to commend the security guard for his quick thinking and actions that played a key role in assisting in this investigation and ensuring the suspect was arrested,” says Superintendent Julie Drotar, Richmond RCMP Senior Operations Officer, “We recognize how concerning an incident of this nature can be to the public. We want to reassure our community that our officers are prepared to respond to any call for service 24 / 7, 365 days a year.”

Richmond RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) have conduct of this active and ongoing investigation.
