The opposition critic for seniors care is speaking out against elder abuse.

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15) Richmond South Centre MLA Linda Reid said:

“Elder abuse can take many forms, whether it be physical or emotional trauma or being denied basic human rights such as autonomy, compassion, or respect. World Elder Abuse Day also strives to remove the stigma surrounding seniors that identifies them as ‘helpless.’

“COVID-19 has not only presented serious health risks to our seniors, but it has amplified many of the challenges they face in their daily lives. Now more than ever, we must fight against this kind of stigmatization and promote better care for our seniors.”

First recognized by the United Nations in 2011, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a global movement that strives to shed light on many of the abuses faced by our parents, grandparents, and loved ones  that go unrecognized far too often.

Reid encouraged taking a moment to help promote the cause by using the #WEAAD2020.
