BC’s salmon habitats will soon benefit from new government funding.

Today, the federal and provincial governments announced $3 million in funding, to be delivered over the next five years through the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund. The fund will also contribute to BC’s COVID-19 recovery by supporting projects that build environmental and economic resilience.

The BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund is a 70 per cent federal, 30 per cent provincial cost-shared program.

The federal government is investing $100 million over five years and providing a one-time investment of $5 million to the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund. The provincial government is investing nearly $43 million over five years and providing a one-time grant of $5 million to the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

Salmon is vital to healthy ecosystems, the economy, BC’s coastal communities and many Indigenous cultures and livelihoods. New projects will focus on protecting fish and their habitats, advancing fisheries management, reviewing concerns related to predation and implementing a climate change plan.

“Helping BC’s wild salmon population recover is a monumental task, but the commitment and partnership among First Nations, scientists, governments, and people who care about these iconic fish is unwavering,” said provincial Agriculture Minister Lana Popham. “These projects will help salmon get up-stream to reach their spawning grounds, provide us with new information about their habits and populations, and contribute to our on-going efforts to have healthy salmon populations in the Pacific.”

The BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund is accepting new applications for funding from July 15 to Sept. 15. Funding is open to Indigenous communities, industry associations, environmental non-governmental organizations, commercial enterprises, and academic institutions.
