Festive times coming to Steveston waterfront with maritime celebration
This year’s Richmond Maritime Festival on
Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29 promises to be even more fun with, “Pop
up entertainment throughout the site for encounters with mermaids, pirates and
more,” according to city spokesperson, Ted Townsend.
Wander the eight-acre national historic site,
listen to music, sit waterside under the cool trees, or pop into the many
exhibits scattered throughout the grounds as maritime history comes alive.
Featuring food trucks that offer a range of
Canadian treats from poutine to bannock, there is a snack for every taste.
Steveston, long home to western Canada’s
largest fishing fleet also offered all the support services the fishers needed
from nets to rope to boat building. All those skilled crafts and more will be
featured at this year’s free family festival.
With lots of free activities suitable for a
variety of ages, there are things to build, things to print, crafts to do and
historic ships to peruse like the 1903 Providence, there is something for
everyone.
The music on offer spans the spectrum too,
with the Boom Booms, Laughing Loggers and the Beauty Shop Dolls.
According to Townsend, “The Richmond Maritime
Festival is produced by the City of Richmond and presented by your local RE/MAX
agents.”
This year’s festival features all aspects of
wooden boats in all their glory from boat building demonstrations, reminiscent
of the origins of the Britannia Shipyard, to free public boarding of historic
water craft of varying ages and sizes along the site’s 183 metre (600 feet)
long dock. Wear sunscreen as even on a cloudy day, the sun’s rays bouncing off
the water can burn. That way, all you take home from the festival will be happy
memories.
“RE/MAX Agents of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley are thrilled to help support the Richmond Maritime Festival this year as the presenting sponsor,” said Jennifer Berry, President, RE/MAX General Advertising Committee. “The RE/MAX committee is led by 35 volunteer realtors who represent your local RE/MAX offices. We contribute and donate large tents and promotional funds at no cost to community groups, and for non-profit events, in the communities where our agents live and work. Enjoy the festival!”
