The first game in the 2018-19 Tunnel Series is in the books. And if it’s any indication of things to come, the Richmond Sockeyes and Delta Ice Hawks will again be battling for supremacy in the Pacific Junior Hockey League.

Though the defending Cyclone Taylor Cup champion Sockeyes sported a rookie-laden lineup, they still managed to keep up with an Ice Hawks team that won both the PJHL’s regular season and playoff titles last season, and appears to again be solid at every position.

Not only did the two teams that last year played for the provincial junior B championship finish up even on the scoreboard—a 2-2 overtime tie—but also finished even in shots with 33 apiece.

The Sockeyes will now make their way to White Rock for the expansion Whalers’ home opener Saturday (Sept. 8) at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Arena. They’re then scheduled to play next Thursday (a rare Thursday night without a home game) at Surrey. Richmond’s next home date is Sept. 20 versus the Grandview Steelers.
