Richmond’s Glenn Gawdin led by example.
The Swift Current Broncos captain scored 14 goals and 32 points in 24 playoff games to lead his team to the Western Hockey League championship. It also earned him most valuable player honours.
Gawdin, 21, scored seven points in the six-game final versus the Everett Silvertips, capped by the Broncos’ 3-0 Game 6 win Sunday in Swift Current.
A fifth-round pick of the Broncos in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, he was signed to a free agent contract by the Calgary Flames during the 2017-18 season. He was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2015 draft but not signed.
Gawdin will now look to lead the Broncos to the Mastercard Memorial Cup which begins Saturday (May 18) in Regina. Besides the Broncos, the Canadian Hockey League championship series will also feature the host Regina Pats and the Ontario (Hamilton Bulldogs) and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) playoff champions.
