City introduces clothes washer rebate program

In a typical home, clothes washers are one of the highest water consumers—second only to toilets.
The City of Richmond is teaming up with BC Hydro to offer a rebate of $100 to Richmond residents who replace their old clothes washers with a qualifying new ENERGY STAR® model. High-efficiency close washers can save up to 64,000 litres of water and 256 kWh of electricity per year.
Those eligible for a rebate must order, purchase (either paid in full or with the first portion paid) and install a pre-qualified clothes washer within a Richmond home (lifetime maximum of one rebate per dwelling) during the fall program period from now until Nov. 27.
To qualify, eligible clothes washers need an Integrated Modified Energy Factor of 2.92 or higher and an Integrated Water Factor of 3.2 or less. A completed rebate application must be submitted to BC Hydro, along with a photocopy of purchase receipts by Jan. 31, 2021. BC Hydro will then issue a cheque for the total rebate amount of $100. Rebate applications for qualifying ENERGY STAR® clothes washers can be found at www.bchydro.com/appliances.
Old clothes washers must be taken out of circulation and disposed of appropriately. Instead of disposing old clothes washers at the landfill, they can be recycled at Richmond’s recycling depot (5555 Lynas Lane). Traffic control is in place at the recycling depot to limit the number of patrons due to physical distancing requirements and to accommodate construction onsite.
Alternatively, residents who receive Blue Box collection may use the Large Item Pick-up Program, which provides convenient curb side collection service for up to six large household items per year. For more information on recycling options, please visit www.richmond.ca/recycle.
