Richmond honours 2019 Sports Wall of Fame inductees

The power of sport will be celebrated at a special civic event Saturday.
Nine remarkable individuals, one team and one unique community event will be honoured with their addition to the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Gateway Theatre.
“We are proud to honour the Sports Wall of Fame inductees for their achievements and commitment to sport in Richmond,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “These individuals highlight Richmond’s rich sporting history and remind us about the power of sport to help individuals achieve their personal goals.”
Those honoured have demonstrated extraordinary commitments to sport in the categories of Athlete, Builder, Coach, Masters Athlete and Team.
Now in its fifth year, the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame is proud to add the following 11 inductees to an already esteemed group of 53 individuals and teams that represent the best Richmond has to offer. This year’s inductees are:
Athletes
• Jim Mills – National Football League (NFL) and Canadian Football League (CFL) offensive lineman
• Jamie Stoddard – Nine-year CFL wide receiver with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers
• Novell Thomas – Point guard on the Canadian Men’s National Basketball Team
Builder
• Dolphin Basketball Classic –Grassroots summer community basketball tournament that has been running since 1986
Coaches
• Carl Savage – Long-time Kajaks coach and organizer of the BC Elementary Track and Field Championships
• Jean-Jacques Schmidt – Long-time Track and Field coach of Kajaks athletes who have attained countless successes including world records
• Jeff Lochbaum – Five-time high school Provincial Champions coach with the Richmond Colts and Richmond Raiders
• Kim Young – Long-time Kajaks coach and community sports advocate, and organizer of numerous Track and Field competitions
• Marshal Shields – Five-time Provincial Gold for Boys Fastball coach
Masters Athlete
• Fred Pawluk – BC Masters Champion and competitive Kajaks cross country and road race runner
Team
• 1996-1998 Richmond Colts Football Team –“Three-peat” high school Provincial Championship team
The Richmond Sports Wall of Fame and accompanying digital kiosk are located at the Olympic Experience at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Wall of Fame is located in the lobby on the first floor, and the digital kiosk is on the second floor as part of the History of Sport in Richmond exhibit. Each inductee will have their name added to the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame, and the digital kiosk will highlight each inductee’s achievements through script, photos and videos. The Richmond Sports Wall of Fame and digital kiosk are free for public viewing year-round.
The Class of 2019 will be officially inducted into the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The induction ceremony is open to the public, but space is limited.
Members of the public are now being encouraged to submit nominations for 2020 inductees to the Richmond Sports Wall of Fame to honour individuals and teams who have played significant roles in building Richmond’s sports community and/or excelled at their sport. Nominations will be accepted up to Dec. 31, 2019. The Richmond Sports Wall of Fame nomination form can be accessed on the City of Richmond website at www.richmond.ca/walloffame.
