Richmond athletes shine at BC Games
Richmond athletes stood tall at the 2018 BC
Winter Games which wrapped up Sunday in Kamloops.
Richmond Special Olympians Nicky Chow, David
Swan, Andrew Weale, Colin Yee, Brayden Pawer and Vincent Li were on top of
their games to help power the Zone 5 team to gold in Special Olympics
basketball. And in Special Olympics’ figure skating, Richmond’s Matthew Lai
medalled in level 3 men’s competition. The Richmond Ravens Special Olympians
(featuring the same group of basketball players that represented Richmond on
the Zone 5 team in Kamloops) will play at the March Madness basketball
tournament this weekend on the North Shore.
In other competition at the BC Winter Games,
which featured over 1200 athletes in 19 sports, local speed skater Lan-Vi
Nguyen earned four medals. That included a silver medal in the under-14 girls’
4,000-metre race, and bronze medals in the 400 metres, 2,000-metre points race,
and super 1,500 metres.
Charlton Tan won a pair of gold medals in
archery, topping the boys’ match play and two-day aggregate.
In figure skating, Ellie Cheung finished
second in the juvenile women’s final and David Li third in the pre-novice
event, while in karate Vikrant Anandkumar topped the field with two gold medals
in the boys’ advanced kata competition. The Zone 5 kumite boys’ team also
earned gold.
In gymnastics, Russell Woodward won the level
3 men’s rings event, added silver in the all-around and on parallel bars.
Teammate and fellow Richmond athlete Lucas Liu was second in the level 3 men’s
rings competition. The Zone 5 gymnastics team combined for second place in the
level 3 men’s category.
Richmond athletes also contributed to team
wins in boys’ curling and in badminton, where Zone 5 topped the girls’ and
mixed doubles events and placed third in boys’ doubles.
The Games bring together the province’s top
emerging high performance athletes in an important development opportunity, and
stepping stone towards higher level sports competitions.
