United Nations stands tall atop summer league

It was quite literally a bounce that went the United Nations’ way.

With five minutes to go in regulation in the Richmond Adult Soccer Association’s summer league Division Two final last Tuesday, United earned a free kick outside the Vancouver Strikers’ penalty area.

Vancouver’s goalkeeper went to punch the ball clear but failed to meet it cleanly. With shouts for pushing ignored, the ball bounced straight to Fraser Kirkland who easily headed the ball into the net for a 1-0 United lead that ultimately gave the club its first league banner.

United entered the match needing all three points to guarantee themselves top spot. It was close early on, with both sides earning scoring chances but neither able to convert.

On Thursday, Delta Blaze made it 10 wins in a row defeating Binger’s Army 5-1. Lance Grisdale opened the scoring for the Army after only five minutes, but 10 minutes later Marcus Brougham from a corner kick evened the score. Just before halftime Geoff Salt netted the eventual winner on a penalty kick.

Delta added three unanswered goals in the second half, with Matteo Serka, Emile Saimovici and Brad Caldwell all finding the net.

With two games remaining in the regular season, the Blaze hope to complete a clean sweep of Division One. If successful, they would be the first team in the league’s 40-year history to achieve the feat.
