It may look a little different, but just as important as ever.

On Saturday, Nov. 21, the Richmond RCMP will hold their sixth annual toy drive in support of the Richmond Christmas Fund. While this year’s event will offer plenty of holiday cheer, the main theme is “safety first.”

Taking place in the Lansdowne Centre parking lot, next to the Canada Line station, the toy drive will be held entirely outdoors.

Between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., community members will be able to drop off donations—both new, unwrapped toys and cash—without ever leaving their vehicles.

“This year, a drive-thru model makes the most sense,” says Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), which runs the Christmas Fund. “It helps keep people apart, while still giving them a chance to participate in the event.”

Another key change: the pancake breakfast that normally accompanies the toy drive won’t happen this year. Instead, McDonald’s will provide every donor with a coupon, and Herbaland will be giving out gift bags filled with samples.

“It was a difficult decision, but, out of an abundance of caution, we’ve chosen not to serve pancakes,” says Gavsie. “The good news is that McDonald’s and Herbaland have really stepped up, to ensure that donors don’t leave empty-handed.”

It’s true the event will look different this year, but its goal remains the same: to collect enough toys to fill an entire RCMP squad car.

“That the toy drive is happening at all is a victory,” says Gavsie. “It’s also a testament to the dedication and generosity of the Richmond RCMP, whose members spend countless hours planning and organizing everything.”

Other event sponsors include the Canada Border Services Agency, Toys R Us, and Real Canadian Superstore.
