Gang members beware; Richmond Mounties will
soon be frequenting your favourite hangouts.
At least, that’s the plan, according to
Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang.
Members of the RCMP’s organized crime unit
and their colleagues from the general duty section, will be conducting
proactive gang patrols.
It’s part of an effort to deter gangs from
using Richmond as a ‘hangout’ or a ‘place to do business’, Hwang said.
To ensure they’re doing an effective job,
Mounties will be reaching out to local businesses and collaborating with them
in locations where these gang members may be setting up shop.
“We recognize that no municipality, including
Richmond, is immune from the impact of gangs and organized crime,” said
Richmond RCMP Supt. Will Ng. “As such, we are implementing measures that
actively target those individuals associated to these gangs. These gang members
and their associates show zero regard for the safety of our good citizens.”
Mounties said the potential hazard gang
members pose to innocent bystanders may be rare, but is nevertheless real.
One of the goals is to disrupt the day-to-day
movements of gang members and their associates.
If you know of a spot frequented by suspected
gang members or their associates, call the Richmond RCMP’s organized crime unit
by calling 604-207-4851, or leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-222-8477.
