Raptors to soar in Terra Nova this weekend
Birds of prey will be in a natural spotlight this weekend during the Richmond Raptor Festival at Terra Nova Rural Park.
Eagles, hawks and owls will captivate spectators of all ages Sunday, Aug. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. as the Pacific Northwest Raptors presents a free educational and entertaining show featuring the birds performing spectacular flying displays, as their handlers share extensive knowledge about them.
This is a unique opportunity to learn about raptor behaviour and hunting and about environmental concerns and conservation.
There will also be many opportunities to see the birds up close and take photographs between demonstrations planned for 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
“The birds are a fascinating bunch with each species having its own amazing set of skills and each individual with its own incredible story and quirky personality,” says Robyn Radcliffe of Pacific Northwest Raptors. “Some of the birds that live and work with us are injured or orphaned birds that cannot return to the wild while others simply do not want to return to the wild.”
Pacific Northwest Raptors supports and promotes conservation of the birds and their habitats through educational programs, while also rescuing and caring for injured wild raptors, striving to return them to their natural habitats.
The Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is also presenting the first of two talks at 12:30 p.m., followed by a speech by David Hancock entitled Eagles Adapating to the Urban Environment at 2:30 p.m.
Terra Nova Rural Park is at 2631 Westminster Hwy.
There is no parking on site, leaving only pedestrian access.
