What are you doing at the end of summer?
Perhaps relaxing, enjoying those last few sweet days in the garden, on the
road, in the campground, or on the sports field?
Four local bicyclists, from a team of almost
20, will be riding 200 kilometers from Vancouver to Seattle to raise money for the BC Cancer Foundation.
Staged over two days, the Ride to Conquer Cancer
Aug. 27 to 28, sees teams of riders compete to raise funds for cancer research.
According The Ride to Conquer Cancer, this event has raised $77 million dollars
since the rides inception.Last
year alone, 1687 riders raised $7.1 million.
Besides the salaries for researcher and
technicians, cancer researchers and diagnosticians need expensive equipment
that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars before you even buy the
chemicals needed to run the tests and experiments using these scientific machines.
The BC Cancer Foundation makes sure the funds
go to researchers at the BC Cancer Agency, where breakthroughs continue in the
hunt for better cancer treatments. Progress is being made; more than half of
all cancers are survivable now and the numbers get better every year.
According to Sarah Roth, President and CEO of
the BC Cancer Foundation, “Funds raised ensure researchers and clinicians at BC
Cancer have the support needed to reinvent the standard of cancer care through
leading-edge research.”
During Salmon Festival, part of our local team, calling themselves The Village Idiots, Judy Wolfe, Graeme Burns, Cindy Hirschberg and Shelley Williams rode stationary bikes outside the bicycle store in Steveston to raise funds for the journey. The trip itself costs money and none of the sponsorships funds are to cover the cost of equipment or travel though, there is no gas money required as the Village Idiots will be using pedal power the whole way.
