TD Bank has been singled out as an Angel Donor by the Richmond Christmas Fund.
The Richmond Christmas Fund presented officials from the bank with a certificate recently, while naming a star “Richmond One TD” in recognition of the financial institution’s extraordinary support.
In 2020, a year to forget, the Richmond Christmas Fund helped create a holiday season to remember for 2,847 low-income residents, who were given toys, grocery vouchers, books, and gift cards.
Among those who received help were 849 children, 318 youth, and 347 seniors.
The Christmas Fund also operated very differently in 2020, adhering to strict health and safety protocols to ensure the program could continue running.
Volunteers met with clients over Zoom, to confirm they were eligible to receive assistance. Hundreds of toy bags were individually prepared for the families who registered, with items selected specifically for each child in a household. And on distribution days, volunteers donned masks, face shields, and gloves, so they could safely give clients their allotment of grocery vouchers and gifts.
“We’re proud that we were able to operate the Christmas Fund safely and responsibly,” says Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG. “There were a lot of people who needed support. We promised to be there for them, and we were.”
The Christmas Fund was made possible by an outpouring of community generosity. The program relied on volunteers, who put themselves on the frontlines so their neighbours in need could share in the holiday spirit.
There were also hundreds of donors, spanning $5 contributions to gifts of $10,000 or more.
“We’ve been running the Christmas Fund for a long time,” says Gavsie. “We can never say that we’re surprised by Richmond’s generosity. But we’re grateful for it, and humbled by it. We’re honoured to be part of such a caring community.”
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (www.rcrg.org) is a registered charity that serves as a hub for volunteering and giving. RCRG is also a direct service provider, operating a child care resource and referral centre, the Richmond Christmas Fund, and a variety of seniors community support services.
