Day Camp for budding ocean scientists at Britannia Shipyard
July 10 to 14, the Ocean Adventurer camp will
offer six to nine year-olds a week of hands-on fun and learning at Britannia
Shipyards National Historic Site on the Fraser River waterfront.
From marine biologist, Dr. Elaine Leung, the
campers will learn everything from how sea mammals use sound waves to navigate
and the impacts of manmade underwater noise to discovering how some commercial
fishing practices can damage marine species through by-catch and net
entanglements. With hands on activities, the young scientists will
explore sustainable seafood practices, plastic pollution’s effect on oceans,
lakes and rivers as well as the impact of waste water, storm drains and ocean
acidification.
According to city spokesperson, Ted Townsend,
“Through fun, hands-on activities, beach combing and games, children will learn
how even just one person can make a difference and that every effort at home
and in the community can have far reaching effects.”
The camp will share the historic site’s Seine
Net Loft, with the new exhibit, Our Coastal Connection, which highlights water
stewardship and educational initiatives.
