A section of Lansdowne Road officially opened early Friday afternoon, allowing drivers to travel directly between Lansdowne Centre and the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Built by the City of Richmond in partnership with the federal government—which provided $4.95 million to support the project as well as upgrades to No. 2 Road—the road extension provides a new east-west corridor for those traveling through downtown Richmond.
“Projects like these help make communities like Richmond among the best places in the world to live, work and raise a family,” said Steveston-Richmond East MP Joe Peschisolido, who spoke on behalf of Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.
Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie said the roadway extension will give motorists, cyclists and pedestrians an alternative route to travel through the downtown core, which will reduce traffic congestion down No. 3 Road.
“Since Richmond is an important centre for international trade, improving how people and goods move throughout our city will also support continued local, regional and national economic growth,” Brodie said.
The new extension links Minoru Boulevard to Alderbridge way and is about 300 metres long. The City of Richmond provided $5 million in support of the Lansdowne Road extension and the No. 2 Road projects.
The new east-west corridor is part of the city’s Ring Road Network, envisioned to provide a series of north-south and east-west routes to alleviate congestion on Westminster Highway and No. 3 Road.
