It may seem a bit odd to be talking water restrictions given the record-breaking rain recently, but the annual efforts to help conserve Metro Vancouver’s supply are again in effect.

Lawn watering regulations were implemented Monday and will be in place through Sunday, Oct. 15. The restrictions are intended to help not only preserve the region’s drinking water but also assure a sufficient overall supply of water during the summer.

The region-wide watering regulations are the first of a four-stage water restrictions plan outlined in Metro Vancouver’s Water Shortage Response Plan to ensure residents use drinking water wisely. The regulations are enforced by the City of Richmond’s Water Use Restrictions Bylaw No. 7784.

Residential lawn watering is permitted as follows:

• Even-numbered addresses from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays

• Odd-numbered addresses Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Non-residential lawn watering is allowed as follows:

• Even-numbered addresses from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

• Odd-numbered addresses from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Lawn watering is permitted at all non-residential addresses from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Fridays only.

These restrictions apply only to lawn watering and not to watering flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees. Morning lawn watering avoids evening hours when demand for water is highest for domestic uses including dishwashing, laundry and showers.
