COVID-19 cases rise again to 724 today

B.C. health authorities reported 724 new cases of COVID-19 today, five of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 162,693 cases.
Of the new cases, 142 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 185 in the Fraser Health region, 64 in the Island Health region, 271 in the Interior Health region, 62 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
The latest local data shows that last week (Aug. 15 to 21), there were 74 new cases in Richmond, up from 57 the week before. The number last week is the highest since the second week of May, when there were 108 new cases in the city.
There are 5,640 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 149 of those people are hospitalized, 83 of whom are in intensive care. The hospital and intensive care numbers continue to rise to highs not seen for months.
To date, 7,390,103 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,504,402 of those are second doses.
This means that 84.4 per cent of adults and 83.7 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 76.7 per cent of adults and 75.6 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.
Sadly, there were two new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 1,804.
Active outbreaks continue at eight long-term care, five assisted or independent living facilities and one acute care facility.
From Aug. 11 to 24, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 82.4 per cent of cases and 86.4 per cent of hospitalizations.
