Seven more deaths bring September total to 57

B.C. health authorities reported seven additional deaths due to COVID-19 today.

The new deaths bring the total to a sobering 1,873, with 57 of those since Sept. 1. There were 45 deaths due to the virus in all of August, and 17 in July.

There are 5,791 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 288 of those people are hospitalized, the same number as yesterday. Intensive care admissions dropped by three to 137.

Across the province, 24 health-care facilities continue to have active outbreaks: 16 long-term care facilities, five assisted or independent living facilities and three acute care facilities. This number dropped to just one in mid-July and remained low for several weeks before rising to highs not seen since February.

Of today’s 661 new cases, 99 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 237 in the Fraser Health region, 66 in the Island Health region, 196 in the Interior Health region, 62 in the Northern Health region and one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

To date, 7,643,973 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,644,716 of those are second doses. 

This means that 86.7 per cent of adults and 86.1 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 79.5 per cent of adults and 78.6 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

From Sept. 7 to 13, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 76.5 per cent of cases and from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13, they accounted for 87.3 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 400 (8.1 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,160 (23.5 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 316 (81.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 22 (5.7 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 49 (12.7 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 7 to 13)

• Not vaccinated: 321.9

• Partially vaccinated: 100.3

• Fully vaccinated: 29.6

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Aug. 31 to Sept. 13)

• Not vaccinated: 43.5

• Partially vaccinated: 8.8

• Fully vaccinated: 1.1
