Youth Now recruiting for fall leadership program
Tomorrow’s leaders are honing their skills today.
Through a program funded by Coastal Capital Savings and the Government of Canada’s Service Corps, Youth Now is providing young adults aged 18 to 25 an opportunity to develop leadership skills while serving on a non-profit board of directors.
“Youth are an underutilized community resource,” says Jocelyn Wong, general manager of the local charity Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives which is recruiting applicants for the 15th edition of its Leadership Richmond—Youth Now program.
“This program seeks to rectify that, by elevating youth to leadership positions and supporting them so they can contribute in a meaningful way.”
Youth Now matches youth leaders with a local non-profit organization, where they serve a year-long term as a board member. As well, the participants are mentored by a more experienced board member and take part in a series of leadership conferences on topics such as fund development, strategic planning and board governance.
“Youth Now has given me the knowledge, experience, and confidence to truly understand the difference I can make in our community as a youth citizen,” says Gurleen Aujla, a 2018-19 Youth Now graduate who served on the board of the Richmond Food Bank.
Over the past 14 years, more than 120 young leaders have completed the program, with many continuing to serve as non-profit board members and in other community leadership roles.
“Above all, Youth Now is about preparing young adults to become the next generation of community leaders,” says Wong. “But it’s also about helping them grow as individuals, and providing them with the skills and tools to excel academically, professionally and personally.”
Application forms for the 2019-20 Youth Now cohort are available online atwww.rcrg.org. The final day to apply is May 31.
Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives is a registered charity that serves as a hub for volunteering and giving. RCRG is also a direct service provider, operating a Child Care Resource Referral Centre, the Richmond Christmas Fund, and a variety of Seniors Community Support Services.
