Eleven more COVID-19 deaths in B.C. today

B.C. reported 11 new COVID-related deaths today. Since Sept. 1, 137 people have lost their lives—averaging 4.72 per day.
In August there were 45 deaths, an average of 1.45 per day, and in July just 17, or 0.55 per day. Since the pandemic began, a total of 1,953 people have lost their lives due to the virus.
B.C. health authorities reported 813 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 186,245 cases.
Of the new cases, 102 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 303 in the Fraser Health region, 82 in the Island Health region, 208 in the Interior Health region, 118 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.
Locally, cases in Richmond rose last week (Sept. 19 to 25) to 68, up from 59 and 56 in the previous two weeks.
There are 6,185 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 340 of those people are hospitalized, 146 of whom are in intensive care. Hospitalizations rose by 24 overnight, reaching the highest point since May. Intensive care admissions rose by five.
To date, 7,831,229 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,745,457 of those are second doses.
This means that 88.4 per cent of adults and 87.9 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 81.6 per cent of adults and 80.8 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.
Health authorities reported two new healthcare facility outbreaks and declared two over. Active outbreaks continue at 16 long-term care facilities, four assisted or independent living facilities and two acute care facilities.
From Sept. 21 to 27, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 71.9 per cent of cases and from Sept. 14 to 27 they accounted for 80.8 per cent of hospitalizations.

After factoring for age, people not vaccinated are 24.6 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated.
