B.C. records 13 COVID-19 deaths

B.C. health officials reported 13 new COVID-related deaths today, the highest in a single day since early February.

They noted that the deaths at Willingdon Care Centre, a nursing home in Burnaby, are reflected in today’s numbers. Eleven of the deaths were people who lived in the Fraser Health region and two in the Interior Health region. Overall, there have ben 2,055 deaths in B.C. due to the virus.

Health officials also reported 667 new cases of COVID-19, two of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 196,433 cases.

Of the new cases, 75 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 246 in the Fraser Health region, 59 in the Island Health region, 101 in the Interior Health region, 184 in the Northern Health region and two new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 5,128 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 367 of those people are hospitalized, 152 of whom are in intensive care. 

To date, 8,025,356 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,848,689 of those are second doses. 

This means that 89.5 per cent of adults and 89.0 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 83.7 per cent of adults and 83.0 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak and declared one over. Active outbreaks continue at 12 long-term care facilities, three assisted or independent living facilities and four acute care facilities.

From Oct. 7 to 13, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 68.3 per cent of cases and from Sept. 30 to Oct. 13, they accounted for 76.3 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Not vaccinated: 2,478 (61.7 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 265 (6.6 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 1,276 (31.7 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 312 (71.1 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 23 (5.2 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 104 (23.7 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Oct. 7 to 13)

• Not vaccinated: 273.3

• Partially vaccinated: 76.2

• Fully vaccinated: 30.4

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 30 to Oct. 13)

• Not vaccinated: 51.3

• Partially vaccinated: 10.4

• Fully vaccinated: 2.3
