B.C. reports 696 new cases, six deaths

B.C. health authorities reported 696 new cases of COVID-19 today, eight of which are epidemiologically linked. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 199,534 cases.

Of the new cases, 76 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 252 in the Fraser Health region, 59 in the Island Health region, 118 in the Interior Health region, 191 in the Northern Health region and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

There are 4,888 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C. and 370 of those people are hospitalized, 139 of whom are in intensive care. 

Sadly, there were six new virus-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,092. Of those who died, one lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region and five in the Fraser Health region.

In comparison, four weeks ago on Sept. 22 there were 759 new cases and 5,458 active cases, 324 of whom were hospitalized including 157 in critical care. Ten people died due to COVID-19.

To date, 8,088,314 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 3,876,579 of those are second doses. 

This means that 89.7 per cent of adults and 89.3 per cent of people aged 12 and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 84.3 per cent of adults and 83.6 per cent of those aged 12 and older have received two doses.

Health authorities reported one new healthcare facility outbreak. Active outbreaks continue at 14 long-term care facilities, six assisted or independent living facilities and four acute care facilities.

Healthcare facility outbreaks fell to a low of just one in mid-July, but have steadily risen since. They peaked at 66 (58 in long-term care or assisted living, eight in acute care) in early December 2020.

From Oct. 12 to 18, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 67.2 per cent of cases and from Oct. 5 to 18, they accounted for 74.9 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Fully vaccinated: 1,361 (32.8 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 315 (68.8 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 28 (6.1 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 115 (25.1 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Oct. 12 to 18)

• Not vaccinated: 294.3

• Partially vaccinated: 86.9

• Fully vaccinated: 32.1

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Oct. 5 to 18)

• Not vaccinated: 54.1

• Partially vaccinated: 11.9

• Fully vaccinated: 2.6
