Soaking up restrictions helps save water
Watering our lawns soaks up a lot more than meets the eye.
Metro Vancouver, which regulates the region’s water supply and services, says water consumption can increase by as much as 50 per cent in summer and early fall, largely due to lawn watering. Region-wide watering regulations, which Richmond has adopted, are seen as an effective way to help preserve drinking water wisely.
Through Oct. 15, restrictions are in place to help ensure sufficient water is available through to the fall rainy season. The rules are part of the first of four stages of water restrictions outline in Metro Vancouver’s Drinking Water Conservation Plan.
Stage 1 regulations mean that residential lawn watering is only allowed as follows:
• Even-numbered addresses on Monday mornings between 1 and 6 a.m. and Friday morning between 4 and 9 a.m.
• Odd-numbered addresses on Thursday and Sunday mornings between 4 and 9 a.m.
• Watering trees, shrubs, decorative planters and flowers may be watered any day between 4 and 9 a.m. using a sprinkler, or anytime using hand-watering or drip irrigation.
Non-residential lawn watering is only allowed as follows:
• Even-numbered addresses on Monday mornings between 1 and 6 a.m. and Friday mornings between 4 and 9 a.m.
• Odd-numbered addresses on Tuesday mornings between 1 and 6 a.m. and Friday mornings between 4 and 9 a.m.
As with residences, trees, shrubs, decorative planters and flowers may be watered any day from 1 to 9 a.m. using a sprinkler, and anytime using hand-watering or drop irrigation methods.
Metro Vancouver says demand for water is highest during evening hours, when residents need water for such uses as dishwashing, laundry and showers.
Richmond is offering two free workshops on drip irrigation for gardens this spring and summer. The first is on Saturday, June 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Richmond City Hall, and the second Saturday, July 13 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Terra Nova Rural Park. Registrationis required.
