COVID-19 in B.C.: 597 new cases, nine deaths

B.C. health officials reported 597 new cases of COVID-19 today. Since the pandemic began, B.C. has recorded 346,793 cases.

Of the new cases, 64 are in the Vancouver Coastal Health region (including Richmond), 118 in the Fraser Health region, 113 in the Island Health region, 194 in the Interior Health region, 108 in the Northern Health region, and no new cases of people who reside outside of Canada.

The latest local data shows that there were 65 cases in Richmond last week (Feb. 13 to 19), down from 109 the previous week (Feb. 6 to 12). 

There are 612 individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 and 102 are in intensive care.

To date, 11,299,923 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in B.C.; 4,287,016 of those are second doses and 2,555,669 are third doses. 

This means that 93.6 per cent of adults, 93.2 per cent of people aged 12 and older, and 90.6 per cent of people aged five and older have received their first dose of a vaccine. In addition, 91.1 per cent of adults, 90.7 per cent of those aged 12 and older, and 86.0 per cent of those aged five and older have received two doses; 57.2 per cent of adults and 55.1 per cent of those aged 12-plus have received three doses.

Sadly, there were nine new COVID-related deaths reported today, bringing that total to 2,840. Of those who died, four lived in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, one in the Fraser Health region, two in the Interior Health region, and two in the Northern Health region.

Active outbreaks continue at 26 long-term care facilities, one assisted or independent living facility, and two acute care facilities.

From Feb. 16 to 22, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 20.6 per cent of cases. From Feb. 9 to 22, they accounted for 33.4 per cent of hospitalizations.

• Partially vaccinated: 110 (2.9 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 2,977 (79.4 per cent)

• Not vaccinated: 171 (29.0 per cent)

• Partially vaccinated: 26 (4.4 per cent)

• Fully vaccinated: 392 (66.6 per cent)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Feb. 16 to 22)

• Not vaccinated: 159.6

• Partially vaccinated: 49.1

• Fully vaccinated: 65.1

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Feb. 9 to 22)

• Not vaccinated: 47.4

• Partially vaccinated: 24.5

• Fully vaccinated: 8.3
